What Is a Substance Use Disorder?
A substance use disorder occurs when the repeated use of alcohol, drugs, or other substances negatively impacts your physical, mental, and social well-being. It can range in severity from mild to severe, with symptoms including cravings, loss of control, and continued use despite harmful consequences.
Understanding Subtance Use Disorders
Types of Substance Use Disorders
We treat a variety of substance use disorders, including but not limited to:
- Alcohol Use DisorderA pattern of excessive drinking that interferes with daily life, relationships, and health. Symptoms may include strong cravings for alcohol, an inability to control drinking, and withdrawal symptoms when not drinking. AUD increases the risk of liver disease, heart problems, and mental health challenges.
- Opioid Use Disorder (prescription painkillers or illicit opioids)It occurs when someone misuses prescription painkillers (oxycodone or hydrocodone) or illicit opioids (such as heroin). It is characterized by cravings, increased tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms. OUD is particularly dangerous due to the high risk of overdose and physical dependency.
- Stimulant Use Disorder (methamphetamine, cocaine)The misuse of substances such as methamphetamine, cocaine, or ADHD medications (e.g., Adderall or Ritalin). Symptoms include increased energy or euphoria, followed by severe crashes, anxiety, or paranoia. Long-term use can lead to cardiovascular issues, cognitive impairment, and severe mental health conditions.
- Cannabis Use DisorderIt develops when someone becomes dependent on marijuana, experiencing cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and continued use despite negative consequences. While often perceived as less harmful, chronic misuse can impact memory, motivation, and emotional well-being.
- Sedative, Hypnotic, or Anxiolytic Use Disorder (benzodiazepines)Involves the misuse of medications like benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax, Valium) or sleep aids. These substances are often prescribed for anxiety or insomnia but can lead to dependency, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms. Misuse increases the risk of accidents, overdose, and long-term cognitive decline.
- Nicotine Use DisorderCharacterized by dependency on nicotine, found in cigarettes, vaping products, or chewing tobacco. Symptoms include strong cravings, withdrawal (e.g., irritability, difficulty concentrating), and continued use despite health risks. Long-term nicotine use increases the likelihood of cancer, heart disease, and respiratory issues.

Screening & Treatment
We offer various screening tools and tests, including:
1. Standardized Questionnaires: Assess the severity of substance use.2. Toxicology Testing: Urine or blood tests to detect substance use and monitor treatment progress.3. Mental Health Assessments: Identify co-occurring disorders such as anxiety or depression that often accompany SUDs.
