Controlled Substance Policy & Procedures

The FDA and DEA are the government agencies that regulate controlled substance prescription practice. Weare required to follow their regulations and your health plan quality standards for refills and follow-up visits.

In recent years, there have been significant changes in the prescribing practices for controlled medications across the United States. Controlled substances, classified as Schedule 2 through 5, encompass narcotics or opioids, sedatives or sleeping medications, appetite suppressants, and ADHD medications. These medications carry a risk of dependence and potential for abuse, may lead to long-term side effects, and necessitate careful monitoring.

Common Medications: Stimulants (Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, etc.), Benzodiapines (Xanax, Ativan, Valium, Klonopin, etc.)

Important Practice Policies

● There are no refills on controlled substances.● A follow-up appointment in the office or via telehealth must occur every 30 days. ● We cannot fill prescriptions if you have not had a follow-up appointment.● We do not accept emails, text, chat, or voice messages requesting a prescription fill. Our practice will not respond to these requests, and you will need to schedule a follow-up appointment. ● No early fills and no last-minute calls will be accepted.● You may not pick up prescriptions more frequently than every 28 days after the date you picked up the previous prescription, even if your pharmacy allows it or tries to dispense your medication prior to this date.● You must follow the prescription directions as stated. If you take extra doses, you will be discharged from our practice.● If your prescription is stolen/lost, a police report must be filed with no exceptions. Our practice must be notified immediately of the stolen/lost medication, and the date it was stolen or lost.

Steps to Get Follow-Up Prescription

Your prescription will be sent after payment if you have an outstanding or overdue balance.4.
