What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes significant shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to function daily. These changes often cycle between periods of mania or hypomania (elevated moods) and depression (low moods). With the right care and management, patients living with bipolar disorder can lead fulfilling and productive lives.
Understanding Bipolar
Types of Bipolar Disorder
1. Bipolar I Disorder● Characterized by at least one manic episode that lasts at least seven days or requires hospitalization.● Depressive episodes typically last two weeks, but they may not always occur.
2. Bipolar II Disorder● Involves at least one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode.● Hypomania is a less severe form of mania that does not require hospitalization.
3. Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia)● Defined by periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms lasting for at least two years (one year in children and adolescents).● Symptoms do not meet the full criteria for mania, hypomania, or major depressive episodes.
4. Other Specified and Unspecified Bipolar Disorders● These include symptoms of bipolar disorder that do not fit into the above categories but still cause significant distress or impairment.
